i dont think this is a christmas song i think its more of a song saying people are being lied to

Vince Bevis
Vince Bevis 2 months ago

All these sentiments by the majority of you people wrapped up in your own insular comfortable lives as it is Xmas. Probably dosed up in alcohol and your own sanctimonious outlook with your little lives and smugness. But I ask how many of you went out with true kindness and invited a homeless person into your home this Xmas for food and a warm bed? Hypocrites the vast majority of you all. Hope your flashing LED lights outside, outshone your neighbour's.

There is such a evocation of sadness to the song for me--maybe just my nostalgia at my advanced age of so many loved ones gone now and times and people long past to never return. Despite this, it is my favorite Christmas song by far. RIP Greg Lake.

Have to figure out if the '75 version is the Works Vol. 2 version? I hear Yamaha GX-1 and Orchestra but not in all versions. Could the Vol.2 version be the original version with overdubs? Same with Brain Salad Surgery on Vol.2? I hear GX-1 but some argue it is the Modular Moog. I say if not GX-1, sounds more like the Moog Constellation. Damn, had several opportunities to ask Keith and Greg and never did. Bummer.

I have already commented on the genius of the man and the beauty of this wonderful song. I. Iove music by Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn and their ilk and i genuinely believe he could stand in front of them, look them in the eye and say, am i good enough and they will reply yes you are. This beautiful song compare s with his other brilliant work, fanfare for the modern man by Copeland. Sorry if i have gone on a bit but Greg Lake is worth all the praise we can give him.

garethbramley1
garethbramley1 2 months ago

Great - I was unaware till recently that ELP also did an earlier version of this but it sounded just like this Greg Lake recording with extra bits.
You never, ever see this in the BBC TOTP2 Xmas compilations - I can only assume they couldn't / didn't buy the rights for this film which was originally inserted into the programme at the time of its release.

My wife of 33 years tells me every year, I don't like Christmas. I don't believe her and live in denial. Today I really HEARD this song while feeding my mom in the nursing home. Now I believe my wife and know why I don't like Christmas.I drove home tonight and wept bitterly on the highway. We feed and clothe ourselves but ignore the homeless. We are warm and full but walk past the wretched. (I love Jesus Christ but I hate what we've done to Christmas. I have not fed or clothed the homeless, as I ought to.😟)

So much expression, which dips into sadness, and disappointment through the lyrics but then rises into hope and joy. Always loved it and always will.

I have always loved progressive British rock from the late 1960's and early 1970's. They definitely moved beyond the Beatles (who are great, too). This music never had the commercial success it deserved.

I found the early part of this video, with desert and camels and such, to be a little odd, and definitely not the imagery I would associate with this song after hearing it year after year for decades. So I stopped watching. I'll enjoy this as a song without a video, as I always have in the past.
