Bullshit. Real history is so much more complex, fascinating and EDUCATIONAL than the revised, edited propaganda we're fed in schools today. Real History is not simple or clear-cut.
Lee, for example, was considered the finest officer in the UNION Army, which is why he was offered command by Lincoln. Lee opposed secession and said so, stating that he wished he owned every slave in the South so he could free them if that would somehow avert war. Lee opposed slavery, but owned slaves through his marriage. They were his wife's dower property. However, he insisted that they be freed before he would take command of the Army of Northern Virginia because he would not be seen as "fighting for slavery.
Today's version of "History" as the schools teach it and as it is generally understood is a cartoon, with a much resemblance to actual history as Remy to a rat.
YOU HAVE NO IDEA OF WHAT OR HOW THE SOUTHERN PEOPLE ACTED DURING THE TIME OF THE CIVIL WAR. YES THERE WERE SOME BAD SOUTHERNERS. JUST LIKE THERE WERE BAD NORTHERN INDUSTRAILIST. WHO TREATED MANY IRISH AND OTHER NEWLY ARRIVED PEOPLE IN THE U.S. LIKE SLAVES IN THE FACTORIES AND THE SLUMBS WHERE THEY WERE FORCED TO LIVE. THE VAST MAJORITY OF SOUTHERN SOLDIERS---DID NOT OWN SLAVES!!!! AND JUST WANTED TO BE LEFT ALONE TO RUN THIER LIVES, FARMS, BUSINESSES & STATES THE WAY THEY WANTED TO. REMEMBER, IT WAS THE NORTH THAT INVADED THE SOUTH!! THIS SHORT VID, SHOWS JUST HOW SOUTHERNERS ACTED AND FELT ABOUT THE SOUTH. www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeGBpTFZhh4 WHAT IT, MAY BE YOU CAN LEARN SOMETHING. :)
Though I agree with alot of points I'd say every war has a martyr on every side, always someone taking atleast what they think is a stand for what is righteous and dies in the coarse; war is fought by leaders instilling ideals in the heads of people to create atleast some zealots in their forces to do what must be done for whatever cause those soldiers have been convinced needs to be fought for with death abound because when diplomacy breaks down people will ask for lose of life to get what they want. Leaders declare war and soldiers die for ideals or at the very least orders
I actually bought this movie as a kid from the local Walmart. I’ve always been pretty big on historical movies. However, when I tried to watch this movie, I found that I couldn’t even sit through the first hour of it. It’s incredibly drawn out, preachy and boring and now I know just how idiotically pro-lost cause it was as well. I don’t know what’s happened to my copy of the movie, but I don’t think I will miss it.
This movie looks bad (I haven’t seen it, and never will), but this criticism seems to be “I disagree with the viewpoint I attribute to the filmmaker.” While I agree that this is annoying when it happens (e.g. I find it annoying when historical accuracy is sacrificed to write in female roles where they shouldn’t be in the name of modern day empowerment, as I see it), I understand that the annoyance I feel doesn’t matter and won’t and shouldn’t stop these decisions from being made.
The minute life imparted the time, focus and desire to actually understanding this goofball conflict, (and it was NOT in either grade 7 nor 11) it seemed like the dumbest frkng exercise in futility EVER! Prevailing ideas of the times, yah yah, I did factor that in, but good grief!! WHY? Probably saw no other path 😭
The fact this video has a 10k dislikes and only 40k likes, meaning a ratio of 1:4 dislikes to likes is very scary to me. This revisionist, rose-tented veiw of the civil war sickens me. We quite litterially have it in quotes from their fucking leaders that they left mainly because of fucking slavery.
Yes. The only war in world history where the losers wrote the history. Union troops drunks, rapist and thieves. The Confederates as pure gentleman, full of holy character and noble and virtuous. All bullshit. I watched in it’s entirety over 3 hrs Birth of a Nation, though for its day a marvelous technical movie masterpiece, it was laughable bullshit too. God and Generals again...What? Ah! Come on man! Tell a lie long enough and it’s believed as truth.
The only reason Slavery was made a issue was to keep England out of the war. England was about to ally to the South. They would have used their navy to supply the south and blockade and force the Union into a two front war between the Confederacy and Canada. Lincoln himself said that if it would restore the Union he would let the South keep their slaves. If it would restore the Union he would Free all the slaves and if it would restore the Union he would free some of the slaves and keep others in bondage.
Like the video, haven't seen the movie but you lay out your points well. The only thing I take issue with is your defense of Brave Heart. It's a decent enough movie, for a prototype of the Passion, but in terms of historical accuracy it is a PoS. For Christ's sake man, they have dudes in the 13th century running around in 17th century kilts and 4th century Pictish war paints! That would be like somebody making a movie about WWII where George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Neil Armstrong team up to fight Mecha-Hitler. Mel Gibson makes the worst historical movies in Hollywood; if you're going to defend that rabid anti-Semite's films at least make sure it's one of his good ones, like Mad Max.
5:42 counter argument that makes more sense
But first is the enemy allowed to have any triumphant music or scenes without it being propaganda?
A large group of people want to leave the union, they vote on it and win with an overwhelming majority, thus being happy and triumphant...The music used for that scene is to experience the emotion of the characters on screen...thus triumphant music. thats all, thats as deep as it goes.....
why is the music "Confederate Propaganda" and not just character relation music as you said early on that the movie relies heavily on music to deliver emotion...it would have been very triumphant for them to think they were creating a new state after a major political victory. They would have been proud, excited, eager.....music is fine.
6:38 Did the war go good for the Confederates? Nope.. So the one guy they called the village idiot... is it not really the idiot is he, this scene is showing that they all are the idiots instead as everyone in the audience knows how the story ends from the beginning with a union victory..... Not sure how thats confederate propaganda either more like the opposite if I wanted to feel some form of bias to the north. But I dont, so its not bias in either direction, most of the movie isnt, you are just adding in flavors you want the movie to taste like.
The Civil War is the only premodern war that I have to deal with, at least once a year, as though I somehow fought in it.
It comes either from a southerner who feels pride in their ancestry, and somehow my being from the north threatens them, or from a black person who believes I should be held responsible for what my "ancestors" did (ironically my ancestors didn't immigrate here until after 1900).
It's all very weird.
I never get it in relationship to other wars. For instance...folks don't just assume I must be apart of the Third Reich because my name is German.
But the Civil War I still have to deal with sometimes as if it's currently happening.
Like I said...it's weird.
Who's to say most slaves weren't at least on good terms with their owners? Plantations of tens and tens of slaves is a myth. The vast majority of slaves were on plantations with less than 10 slaves. You've been brainwashed by movies like 12 years a slave and Django. Such events did occur but they weren't the norm
As a southern through and through let me say that the Confederates were treasonous traitors against the United States of America. They rebelled in response to a free and fair election and the increasing calls to end the evil oppression of an entire race of people. I prefer to follow the example set by Sherman and burn those flags in a bonfire while playing the national anthem.
This film is an hate crime, a crime against cinema/ history, & ultimately a crime against humanity. Far more offensive, insidious, & pernicious than Birth Of Nation. Et tu Robert Duvall, Jeff Daniels smh? Stephen Lang somehow isn't surprising, on account of... his face, IDK, I mean look at that guy's eyes lol.
Man that confuckurate flag is hate .it has not a mfkng thing to do with no dam heritage.its the sign of loosers and scumbags who think enslaving a human being is cool .about all those statues of enemies of the United States why tha hell do we have statues of losers and jerk offs .bring em all down
Oh no, his water bottle got shot, how will he ever hydrate?
The only person in the entire Federal army who doesn't hydrate at all is Conan... I mean- Pvt. Jedediah Longtree of the 123rd New York Infantry Regiment.
