I have fond memories of this show as it was sometimes in the back while growing up and it was so much fun. Despite my own French familyname I could see the humour and didn't think there was any malicious intent by the makers. French familynames are quite common in England no surprise with the long history and tradition between the two.
Sorry but Richard is a horrible person. Sure Hyacinth is annoying as hell but she loves him dearly and cares about him. Nothing she ever does is done to intentionally hurt him or cause him any negativity. Their home structure is that he works and she maintains the home. She always puts 100% into it. She loves him dearly and thinks about him all the time. She was genuinely delighted that Richard was being forced into early retirement so they can spend time at home together. She encourages the best from Richard and her son. When he was bored around the house she pushed him towards using his camera in order to get a hobby to keep him happy. She does her social obligations and looks for ways to support the success of her husband, for example by using her social abilities to try and meet connections that would help her husband, such as when the frozen foods production manager position opened up.
Richard on the other hand since around series two has just been so horrible to wards her intentionally. He badmouths her behind her back to neighbours, he answers sarcastically and isn't grateful for all that Hyacinth does out of the love of her heart.
Hyacinth is annoying as hell and has her quirks, but she doesn't ever mean to be horrible or cause upset to Richard. Richard, on the other hand, is intentionally rude to her and demonstrates his dislike of her openly.
