If you stabilize your wood, it will impregnate it all the way through and make it usable for turning. Someone in your group probably does stabilization. See if you can hook up with him/her. You have some beautiful spalted wood there. I'm sure you can make some beautiful stuff with that.
One of my neighbors asked me to turn a dozen or so "Trees" for Christmas presents for his family and after a few practice tries, I ended up with a pretty easy technique to turn them. One of the first "practice" versions and two of the 'more like finished products' are shown on this page of my site... www.plusaf.com/woodshop/20-trees.htm
The photo and link in the lower right corner of this page www.plusaf.com/woodshop/22-fashion-accessories.htm shows what I made for a craft show for last November. I modified the "leaves" to have a flat area that I could drill in pairs around the rim to insert earring hooks. I sold a smaller version (about 12 pairs holder) at the craft fair. Enjoy!
A piece with that much spalting, treat with a wood hardener, leave for a couple of days ,check for soft areas, treat again ,,,, no a safety note, spalting is a fungus growing thro the wood ,,that dust on your lungs , not good, scrapers make a lot of dust,,, keep safe,,. Regards Alf
Question: with spalted wood", it can be turned without undergoing any treatment? I saw yours broke, but I assume you have had success turning spalted wood. Is there anything I should know about turning it or use of other tools on it? I have so far turned only one item ever... a few weeks ago, a wooden "club".
It's a shame the spalted ash didn't work out. I think it would have been beautiful. However this one looks great too, so no great loss. Minwax makes a wood hardener that might help stabilize punky wood. I think it is intended for rotted wood and it works well for that, but it might be worth a try on over spalted wood.
Really like the way this turned out, looks really classy. By the way, you tried really hard to get that star on top, sorry it didn't work out but look up Mike Peace and the trees he turned, he shows a way of turning the star and tree all in one piece. Merry Christmas.
Nice dude, been checking out some of your stuff, I gave this here vid a like! You doing ok today? I myself do vlogs, if you like such things, I'm trying to be fairly consistent with putting them out. They're here if you like funny things: www.youtube.com/user/M3GreatRiffs Keep up the good work!'`'`'
